We engaged Greensmith to design and build our garden studio in a short time frame. We wanted it to be a lightweight and efficient building that could be used to house a kiln, and function as a light filled, well ventilated workspace. The concept allows the structure to be just a shell, or idea, of a building. It was not required to be a habitable space. We used Ampelite cladding on the north, east, and south faces to allow the light to pass through during the day, and at night time the building appears to hover and glow, giving it it's name, The Lantern.
The space is divided into wet and dry areas for different kinds of work, and separated by a bridge which breaks up the block, allows a site-line through to the surrounding bushland, and creates a covered entry to both the north and south spaces. Each end of each block opens with large sliding panels to create ventilation, views, and connect the working spaces to the outdoors. Each of these panels were built off-site to exactly the same detail, for efficient construction onsite. Greensmith nailed the brief, the budget, and the timeframe.
